Should you co-sign your child’s mortgage?

Thinking of co-signing your child’s mortgage? Think again.

  • You’re liable for 100% of the debt
  • It counts against your borrowing power
  • Renewal can happen without your consent
  • Nearly impossible to unwind if things go sideways

Smarter alternatives: early inheritance (investments, HELOC, reverse mortgage) + estate equalization planning. Peter breaks it all down on this week’s CTV Morning Live Vancouver.

What happens to your RESP when you pass away?

This week on CTV Morning Live Vancouver, Peter explains what really happens to your RESP if the Subscriber dies – and clears up a common misconception.

Most people think a RESP disappears from their estate because it’s a “trust”—but that’s not quite true. It’s actually a contract between you (the Subscriber) and your bank or financial institution (the Promoter).

So, what does this mean for your RESP and your loved ones after you’re gone?

Peter breaks down how you can:

  • Name a successor Subscriber
  • What they need to do to take over, and
  • Whether your personal representative can step in.

Don’t miss this episode – it’s all about protecting your RESP and planning ahead for your kids’ future.

Regulators point to sales targets and incentives as key issues. It’s time to stop buying products—and start buying a plan. Tune in and get informed.

RRSP Carry Forward: What You Need to Know

Peter Cishecki is sharing his expertise this week on CTV Morning Live (Vancouver). The topic? RRSP carry forward.

Here’s the key takeaway: Don’t use all your RRSP deductions if it pushes you into too low a tax bracket. Sometimes, it’s smarter to re-file and repay a portion of your refund.

Below is a real example to help explain:

  • I overcontributed to my RRSP before filing, just to be safe. After tax season, and a review of my projected 2025 income, my accountant re-filed my 2024 return. She had applied too many RRSP deductions, which dropped me into a lower tax bracket than ideal.
  • Re-filing let me repay part of the refund and carry forward some of those deductions to 2025, when they’ll save me more in taxes.

Bonus: I won’t need to save as much this time around. Here’s the truth: the real money you make on RRSPs isn’t just about your rate of return—it’s about tax strategy.

Make the most of your contributions. Tune in for the insights you need.
